Artificial Intelligence in pharma industry

 **Artificial intelligence in Pharmaceuticals**

Artificial intelligence is a concept that involves developing intelligence in machine which is possible by learning from humans and interaction with environment.
few examples:
 1. Playing chess against CPU. ( before making each moves CPU mimics millions of moves with possible winning outcomes and eliminating failure attempts at same time.)
2. Speech recognition i.e google voice search  conversion of speech to text
3.Face recognition by apple i phones etc.

 Basic terms :
1. Algorithms : algorithm is a set of rules or instructions given to an AI program, neural network, or other machine to help it learn on its own.
2. Big data :big data is a large volume of data that, when analyzed, produces usable data for deep learning that  allows machines to solve complex problems  .

Current application of AI in Pharma Companies:

1.Research based ;
 a) Drug discovery : It involves finding a potent biologically active (therapeutic) compound out of many possible combinations of molecules usually takes more time. AI does it  in fraction of time as it performs various combination so that compound found is potent and meets the desired effect in virtual models .Else wise, it does it in non-targeted way .
Novartis is currently using machine learning to classify digital images of cells, each treated with different experimental compounds. The machine learning algorithms collect and group compounds that have similar effects together.

b)clinical trials :
eg  Deep 6 uses AI to proactively find drug trial candidates
for clinical trial , more amount of time is required for actual trial and choosing appropriate candidate. AI reduces this time by analyzing  clinical data uploaded as profiles by doctors and researchers and then those candidate profile is chosen for clinical trial.IBM Watson helps match patients with the right drug trials

2.For  Diagnosis

c)New therapy identification/optimizing old therapy :
eg TREWS an machine learning and deep learning based AI that is used to identify and prevent  sepsis before it is fatal by analysing medical record and other pre and post septic tests of million septic infected patient . Thus optimizes drug therapy.
GNS Healthcare and Genentech use AI to develop new cancer therapies. A research team led by the National University of Singapore (NUS) has used an AI platform called CURATE.AI to successfully treat a patient with advanced cancer and completely halting disease progression

d) Personalized medicine and rare disease identification:
Using AI, body scans can detect cancer and other diseases early, as well as predict health issues people might face based on their genetics It uses each patient’s medical information and history to optimize the treatment decision-making. Recently, Watson correctly diagnosed a rare form of leukemia in a patient originally thought to have acute myeloid leukemia. It reportedly examined millions of oncology research papers in 10 minutes after which it successfully diagnosed the patient and recommended a personalized treatment plan

 3.  Related to product:

e) Supply chain management and marketing :
Machine learning makes it possible to discover patterns in supply chain data by relying on algorithms that quickly pinpoint the most influential factors to a supply networks’ success, while constantly learning in the process.Source: DHL, Artificial Intelligence in Logistics, 2018 (PDF, 45 pp., no opt-in).

f) Manufacturing :
Chemist can design dosage form by 3D printing and for manufacturing AI based robotic machinery are used  .

Covid19 Lockdown effect on brain .

Effect of lockdown on mental health . Both social isolation and loneliness are major risk factors for poor physical and mental health status through enhanced chronic inflammation; As chronic inflammation biomarkers, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the concentration of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured. Isolated-Lonely condition (i.e., being both socially isolated and feeling lonely) was associated with higher NLR among men (B = 0.141, 95%CI = −0.01 to 0.29). Interestingly, Nonisolated-Lonely condition (i.e., not socially isolated but feeling lonely) was associated with lower CRP among women . Solution: 1.Personal resilience, coping behaviours, and social support were identified as protective factors against loneliness. 2. Engage in social engagement activities via social media app. Engage in helping other or solving problems of other to lower get  sense of satisfaction . 3.learn a new skill, make a new habit , extend your creativity by trying differen...

review lithium as mood stabilizer

1.Lithium as a mood stabilizer has been used as the standard pharmacological treatment for Bipolar Disorder (BD)   2.Recent studies have also shown that it has the potential for the treatment of many other neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease, through its neurotrophic, neuroprotective, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions. -- Therefore, exploring its pharmacokinetic features and designing better lithium preparations are becoming important research topics.  ---Lithium is rapidly and completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration. Its level is initially highest in serum and then is evidently redistributed to various tissue compartments. It is not metabolized and over 95% of lithium is excreted unchanged through the kidney, but different lithium preparations may have different pharmacokinetic features. Lithium has a narrow therapeutic window limited by various adverse effects, but some no...

Drug toxicity of psychotropic drugs

Drug toxicity of psychotropic drugs. Drug toxicity is the development of severe, drug-related complications, which may require premature drug withdrawal or dose reduction. 1. acute toxicity is  highest in.                  antidepressants  lower in neuroleptics   very low in anxiolytics. 2. major problems stem  Anxiolytic ---misuse and overuse. neuroleptics --- tardive dyskinesia is a serious threat to longterm therapy.   antidepressants ---low therapeutic index and a resulting high incidence of severe and fatal poisoning cases, both intentional and accidental. 3.Poisoning death rates per million prescriptions were about 10 times higher for tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) than for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), England and Wales, 1993-2004 4 .Psychotropic drugs with hepatotoxic potential can be classified based on their intended use:  1) antipsychoticsneuroleptics including phenothiazine...
